Bond was set at $20,000 Thursday for St. Bernard Parish President David Peralta after he was indicted on a count of sexual battery the day before.
The charge is in connection with an alleged attack on his wife Sharon, last October 27.
The couple is now involved in divorce proceedings.
Sharon Peralta has claimed that she was brutally raped. David Peralta recently told The Advocate that the two engaged in "rough sex" at his wife's request.
"That's what she wanted," Peralta told the paper. "She asked for it," he said.
Sharon Peralta alleges that she was handcuffed, beaten and raped against her will.
David Peralta, who has said he intends to seek re-election next year, was not indicted on a rape charge by the grand jury in St. Bernard Parish.
Peralta's attorneys told Fox 8 that after the bond hearing, Peralta reported to the parish jail to be processed. He was released a few hours later.
Sexual battery is a felony charge that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
The case will be handled by an ad hoc judge since all five judges in St. Bernard Parish have recused themselves from hearing the case.
